Kalle Kutvonen & Finnish Lapland

Fjordalp friend and ambassador Kalle Kutvonen tells us about his home mountains in Finnish Lapland.

Where are you based / do most of your riding?

I live in the Finnish Lapland in a place called Pyhä Ski Resort. It’s located about a 2 hour drive from Rovaniemi.

How would you describe the kind of skiing / snowboarding you like to do?

Most of the days I spend riding around the resort using lifts. Pyhä has a really nice profile of slopes and lots of high quality tree skiing. The national forest boundary is right next to the ski area so it’s also easy to do ski touring in the surrounding fells!

What do you like best about your home mountains?

They’re close and somewhat quiet. It’s super convenient to head out the door, go for a short tour and then come back and ski the lifts in the evening. I also love the community where basically every one who lives in Pyhä loves to go skiing and snowboarding and spend time outdoors!

Tell us about the natural environment; relief, climate, flora, fauna etc.

We have a lot of rocks and evergreens. The fells used to be mountains but during the ice age they were ground into smaller mountains with lot of rocks hahha. The 24-25 season has been really shark-infested off piste. The weather can be really harsh with temperatures ranging from +5 celsius to -40 celsius. I have noticed a change in that also, this year it’s been raining more than before and the snowpack has been super shallow.

I have also seen so many ravens this year,.I think that’s interesting. Some cultures see ravens as a a good omen and I’d like to believe that!

What would your ideal day in the mountains look like?

"Wake up to about 30cm new dry snow, have some coffee in the morning and then head out to the lifts to get fresh tracks in the ski area first!"

Any recommendations for visiting skiers and snowboarders looking for good snow and good terrain?

Get to the mountain and start exploring the national forest. The ski school offers backcountry tours and there are also some other operators doing guided tours. Take part in the events the ski resort arranges and say hello to people in the lift, we’re happy to share the favourite spots!

Favourite Fjordalp product?

Has to be the EDM Accessory case, it holds my snacks and spork and basically lives in my pack all the time.
